The term fall of Rome refers to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, which fell under the weight of invasion by Germanic peoples. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1,000 years.
The Germanics formed their own kingdoms in the former lands of the western part of the Roman Empire. The Franks developed the most powerful kingdom. They took over Alemannic possessions in southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria and north-western France and of the Visigoths in south-eastern France. They also conquered the Burgundian kingdom in eastern France. Later Pepin took over northern Italy. His son Charlemagne created the Carolingian empire and conquered part of northern Spain and northern Germany. Thus, this empire covered most of Western Europe.
