There is probably no Official criteria that can define visit for everyone and certainly the term is used differently by a variety of travellers. Be prepared to defend the criteria that you use. Most do not consider the following as a visit:
- Flying over.
- Landing in but never getting off the plane or ship.
- Landing in but never leaving the terminal.
- Landing in but not at least spending the night. But if that is the case, very few people will ever have visited Vatican City.
- If you visit the country before it was that country, it probably should not be placed on your list.
- If you visited Guantanamo Cuba and never left the US Naval Base, then you have no right to claim a visit to that country.
- If you transit the Panama Canal without leaving the ship, then you have not visited Panama.
- A week in Hong Kong is not a visit to China.
- A year in Korea or Vietnam is not a visit, at least during the war years.
- A visit to Canada requires much more then a drive across Peace Bridge. Mexico is certainly not visited when you walk into and around Tijuana for a couple of hours.
