Frederick Douglas was an influential person in US history regarding the issue of slavery. He was also a popular speaker for abolitionists. In Chicago he gave a speech in 1854 denouncing the Act as further influence of the conspiracy of "Slave Power", which he said was the reason that the slave state of Texas was brought into the US in 1845. He believed more proactive measures were needed to stop the advance of slavery.
