After leaving the Presidency in 1797, George Washington retired to Mount Vernon, his plantation in Virginia, and tried to resume the life of a farmer and plantation owner.
His advice was often sought by the political leaders of the US. From 1798 until his death in 1799, he held a commission as Lieutenant General and Commander-in-chief of the US armies that were being planned for any prospective conflicts. When he died on December 14, 1799, he was still the senior officer of the US Army.
He became the first President of the United States of America. He wrote the US Constitution and was part of the "Bill of Rights". He also served for two years as president then declined the third year and made it a law saying that the president can only serve for two years. He died December 14, 1799 at mount Vernon, Virginia at age 67. He has a sculpture of his head on mount Rushmore.
