Since Henry VIII wanted an annulment from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and the Pope wouldn't give it to him, he got so annoyed that he broke away from Catholicism and made his own religion, the Church of England, which he was head of. He gave himself an annulment and married his mistress, Anne Boleyn, and in succession either gave himself an annulment or beheaded the wife in question (unless she died or outlived him). His son, King Edward, inherited the throne after his death and continued letting England live under the Anglican Church, but when he died Queen Mary, who was half-Spanish and fully Catholic, took the throne and insisted on Catholicism for the country. She burned almost 300 martyrs at the stakes for being Protestant. When she died after five torturous years, Queen Elizabeth took over. She brought the country back to Protestantism, as it still is today.

Henry became angry with the Pope when the Pope would not grant him the right to a divorce. So, Henry broke with the Church of Rome and began a work that would become the Church of England, one of the many Protestant organizations.
