Italian Immigration to Australia, particularly after WW2, was a chief reason for the development of soccer in Australia. Although there was, of course, British influence, the Italians and Greeks had particular influence in gradually building a strong base for the continued development of soccer.
Also they had much influence in Australian cuisine: spaghetti in particular, became much more popular ... increasing popularity with pizzas, pastas, etc. were all much Italian-influenced. They were also good workers, and filled factory jobs (due to a lesser education) that helped build a solid manufacturing base in Australia - particularly in shoe and clothing industries.
They also contributed to the strength of Roman Catholicism and the number of Catholic schools increased accordingly.
In their backyards, they loved to grow vegetables - especially tomatoes and lettuce, etc.
Finally, being good catholics, they greatly contributed to family life in Australia through having larger families than many Anglo-Australians. This, also, helped grow economic demand and gave jobs to the increasing adult population through the 1950's, 60's and early 70's (up until the populace at large started believing the university-led concept of zero-population growth and limited resources).
