john Locke was a political philosopher whose works were read by many of the framers of the constitution, notably Thomas Jefferson. Locke is probably most famous for his social contract, which basically states people form government, forfeiting some rights for the protection of others. Locke lists inalienable rights that Jefferson refers to in the Declaration of Independence. These include the rights to life, liberty, and property (Jefferson changed property to pursuit of happiness).
