Joseph Brandt , also known as Thayendanegea, was a War Chief of the Mohawk Tribe in the Iroquois Confederacy, or Haudenosaunee, before and during the American War of Independence. and continued to negotiate with Britain and the US for his people and other Native American Tribes for years after the War.
He was a British military officer during the American Revolution, sought return of lands to the Mohawk people and advocated that the Iroquois Confederacy abandon their declared neutrality and side with the British. He developed a, perhaps undeserved, reputation for brutality among his American foes.
He died in what is now Burlington, Ontario, Canada, in 1807.
