I'm afraid I don't know. But I do have a US stamp which is a 2c George Washington stamp. It bears a very nice centrally placed frank which has the text: Clarke and Drury, Memphis, Tennessee, Commission Merchants. The frank carries the date July 20, 1868. So the function Commission Merchant was operative not long after the end of the Civil War, if not earlier? Incidentally, my stamp, which is light orange, carries lettering at the top and bottom which is an integral part of the stamp itself. I cannot quite make out what it says. Something like (along the top) .........REV and possibly at the bottom US INTERIOR. But the lettering is a bit obscured by the aforementioned frank. If anyone can let me know what it might be saying I'd be grateful.
