Opium was a huge export from India, especially into China which created huge revenue for the British Empire.
The carrabiean islands were a source of sugar and rum for the empire. Huge numbers of African slaves were forced to cross the channel and work on plantations. Basically the empire gained a cheap and abundant supply of sugar at the expense of hundreds of thousands of slaves. Imperialism at its very worst! :(
