It is the emission of light occurring at a temperature which is below that of the incandescent bodies. Luminescence includes phosphorescence and fluorescence.

I should have added that I only know this through my study of botany. It is seen in both plants and insects. The property of a plant in which this may occurr is of a substance's ability within the plant to transform radiation so as to emit rays of a different wavelength or "color". Certain insects such as a firefly for example can give out light without burning or burning so slowly that heat is not given off from the light.

On land, it can be seen as the soft yellow-green flash of Fireflies. On the darkening sea, it can be found as the bright-blue glow of dinoflagellates surrounding a nighttime swimmer. These living lights are not produced by electricity or heat or even magic, though they may look magical. These lights are the result of chemical reactions. They are examples of bioluminescence.

Bioluminescence means "living light." Animals that can produce light are called bioluminescent. Bioluminescence comes in different colors, from violet through red. The dominant color on land is green because it reflects best against green plants. The most common bioluminescent color in the ocean is blue. This color transmits best through seawater, which can scatter or absorb light.

In the deepest parts of the oceans that scientists have sent unmanned subs, they found that marine life creates its own light, called bioluminescene. Interestingly, supposedly these creatures are blind or have no sight because they live in blackness, but they 'glow' with translucent light (bioluminescene) where you can see through the organism.

emitting light....light not caused by heat alone. Glow in the dark. Light caused from chemical or electrical energy.
