The saltwater crocodile lives in a variety of habitats. The name "saltwater crocodile" is derived from the fact that the species is known to occasionally travel long distances at sea but it is mostly associated with river mouths/estuaries. The highest saltwater crocodile densities have been recorded within the lower sections of the rivers of Australia's Northern Territory and the island of New Guinea. The species is also found, sometimes in high densities, a fair distance inland within freshwater swamps, lakes and rivers. The hatchling crocodiles require freshwater to survive, so the species is not a "true" marine crocodile. The American crocodile of Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean and southern Florida lives in similar habitat and is often mistakenly called "saltwater crocodile" due its tendency to travel within the ocean as well.
