On December 7th in 1941 Aviators of the Japanese military flew from their aircraft carriers and bombed the US Naval fleet and airplanes without provocation by the United States. The goal of the Japanese had been to eliminate the US ability to send their naval fleet to Southwest Asian nations and islands the Japanese planned to take over to get their oil and raw materials.

The Japanese people were surprised because they had not been informed prior to the attack. They were powerless to stop the action anyway. The Emperor and the Military and Parliament ran the country, not the general populace.

The Japanese Americans and Canadians paid the price for this unexpected attack. Immediately the Japanese Americans and Canadians became a hated group of people suspected of being spies for Japan. The leaders of both nations overreacted by announcing to the Japanese they had to pack up and be ready to go to the internment camps.

Some Japanese were able to keep their farms but most lost their homes and business. They were taken to camps that were not ready for them. They had to live in shack like buildings with no Plumbing or toilets. They all had to eat in a common eating area. These Japanese paid a four year long price of being imprisoned when they were not spies for Japan. The Japanese men who were born in Canada and America were recruited to serve in the military. Many served to prove to both nations they were true Americans and Canadians not enemies. Some of their families were furious they would serve nations who had imprisoned them when they were innocent.

The US Supreme Court declared the internment of the Japanese to be unconstitutional and the president was ordered to release the Japanese. Truman did not release them until long after the war was over.
