Grant's unawareness that there were any Confederates in the area.

They noted that his men were resting easy by the Tennessee river, and launched an attack that would have overwhelmed them, had it been continued. But the Confederate commander called a halt for the night, and by next morning Grant's troops had rallied, helped by reinforcements from the East.

The Confederate commander, gen. Beauregard was forced to suspend further assaults against Grant's positions after the last desperate Confederate attack against the line of Dill's Branch was repealed with heavy losses by the fire of Webster's 50 guns battery and that of gunboats Tyler and Lexington, preventing them definitively from sweeping the Union's left wing away from the vital position of Pittsburg Landing.

Furthermore, Beauregard, aware he had lost the initiative and the enemy Army was gaining the superiority, decided to pull back his lines to better face the counterattack

which would follow next morning.

After the battle of Fort Donelson, Grant occupied the strong strategic position of Pittsburg Landing on the left bank of the Tennessee River and was waiting for Bank's Army of Ohio to join his Army of Tennessee (Union).

Grant was aware that the Confederates were concentrating near Corinth in order to give battle. He didn't expect it before a couple of day, but the enemy army were already next to him and about to attack. So he didn't give any order to stand by for an impeding fighting. The only defensive measure was limited to the activity of large reconnaissance patrols, which though touching in contact with enemy could not ascertain their real strength and deployment.

So the Confederate Army as a whole remained practically undetected and was already deploying to develop a devastating surprise assault which started on April 6, 1862 in the early morning, starting the battle.

The Battle of Shiloh began on the southwestern side of Tennesssee and started to help prevent and help stop slavery.

Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant, including William T. Sherman, camped on the Tennessee River at Pittsburg Landing, Tenn. (near Shiloh Church), in preparation for an offensive. Confederate forces under A.S. Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard attacked, surprising the Union troops and forcing their retreat, though Johnston was mortally wounded. A Union counterattack the next day regained the lost ground, and the Confederates withdrew to Corinth, Miss. Both sides claimed victory, but the battle was considered a Confederate defeat. Each side suffered about 10,000 casualties.

The battle of Shiloh was basically the bloodiest battle to date. However to expand on this topic, this is an overview of what happened: Ulysses S. Grant was ready to strike into the heartland of the SHouth and ConfederateAlbert Sidney Johnston ordered his troops to attack Grand before Buell, the other Union commander, could arrive. The surprise attack from Johnston pushed back the Union troops back from the high ground they occupied towards the Tenneesse River. The Union troops struggled and then surrendered. While the Union forces were pinned against Tennessee River the Confederates were exhausted and it was still not quite a victory for them. General Johnston lost his life and this effected the Confederates morale. Then reinforcement (Buell's Troops) finally arrived during the night as did forces under General William H. Wallace, helping assist Grant fight the Confederates. At the break of dawn, Grant attacked pushing the Confederate forces back until they retreated in the afternoon. The battle however exhausted both sides. This was another wake up call that the war was not over and still costly as ever. ti happened in april, 1862

After the Union army moved down the Mississippi River and captured Fort Donnelson, Grant moved down the Tennesse River to a place called Pittsburg Landing. His troop ships could not proceed much further because the river was too rocky and shallow Muscle Shoals, AL. Grant established a camp and was organizing his army to move into Mississippi and cut the rail road line. He was waiting for Gen Buell to march across land to join him. The Confederates moved into position and launched a surprise attack against the Union position. The initial attack occurred at a small church called Shiloh Church. Gen. Sherman's camp was over-run by the attack and they were pushed back. The Union army reformed along a road that became known as "the Hornet's Nest". Confederate Gen. Ruggles collected 66 artillery guns and fired into the Hornet's Nest to dislodge them. At the same time, the Confederates launched an attack on their right flank at the Peach Orchard. This attack was lead by the highest ranking Confederate officer, Gen. A. S. Johnston, and the Governor of Tennessee and a past Vice-President of the US. Gen Johnston was accidently shot in his knee by one of his own men firing Enfield Rifles, and he bled to death before he could be treated by his doctor. The Confederates over-ran the Hornet's Nest and captured a large number of Union prisoners. The Confederates continued to push the Union back to Pittsburg Landing. Gen Grant established a new line of defense and stopped their attack. During the night Gen. Buell arrived and crossed the Tennessee River to re-inforce Grant. The next day, the Union launched a counter-attack that pushed the Confederates all the way back to where the it started the first day.
