He escaped through Maryland and accross the Potomac river to Garrett's farm south of Port Royal. He was surrounded there and refused to surrender. He was shot in the neck by Sergeant Boston Corbett and died on the farmhouse porch in the early morning hours of 26 April 1865 at the age of 26.

Booth jumped from the Presidential box and broke his leg but made it his horse and escaped into Maryland, crossed the Potomac River into Virginia . He found a Dr, Mudd who set his leg and eventually made it to Garrett's Farm south of Port Royal where he refused to surrender to the Union Cavalry that surrounded the tobacco barn where he was hiding. He was shot in the neck and died three hours later. He fled outside the city to a barn, where he hid until American soldiers found him and shot him. The related link offers pictures and details.
