1992 was a very bad year for Queen Elizabeth II- Prince Charles and princess Diana announced that they were to divorce, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson DID divorce, and then at the end of the year a large part of Windsor Castle was gutted by a huge fire, which destroyed several state rooms and badly damaged St. George's Chapel. She wryly described the year as her 'annus horribilis'. In that year she also made state visits to Malta, France and Germany.

She made a considerbale number of state visits throughout the 1990s, including to Russia, Hungary, South Africa, Malaysia, Poland, the Czech Republic, India and South Korea (Google can provide you with a full time-line of her state visits).

Charles and Diana finally divorced on 28th August 1996. The following year, Diana was killed in a car crash in a Parisian underpass on 31st August along with her lover Dodi Fayed and their driver, Henri Paul. Her death shocked and stunned the British nation, and saw an outpouring of emotional mourning not seen since the death of Winston Churchill 32 years earlier. The Queen declared an official period of mourning and lead the official State funeral. Prince Charles later went on to court his long-time sweetheart Camilla Parker-Bowles.

Queen Elizabeth's youngest son prince Edward married his long-time girlfriend Sophie Rhys-Jones on 19th June 1999. At the Millenium Celebrations at the end of that year, the Queen gave a special address to the nation, and there was a firework display at Buckingham Palace.

Her younger sister, Princess Margaret, died on 9th February 2002 at the age of 72, from a stroke caused by arteriosclerosis brought on by a lifetime of heavy smoking.

Only 7 weeks later, the Queen also lost her mother, who passed away on 31st March at the great age of 101. However, the year progressed on to a happier note when she celebrated her Golden Jubilee in early June.
