Very difficult to remove
---
might twist the gasket.
only hand tighten filters.
wrenches are only for removing.
Buy the correct filter for your car and it will fit. If you mean how to install it then oil the gasket and tighten the filter 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the mounting surface. Do not over-tighten.
You must hand tighten the filter.
To change the oil filter first drain the old oil. Then use an oil filter wrench, preferably the cup type you put on a ratchet, and unscrew the filter. The filter is located right next to the oil pan, it's pretty obvious what it is. Then take the new filter, rub some oil on the gasket, and hand tighten it. DO NOT tighten with wrench, only hand tighten it! Then fill the car with new oil. All done.
Remove the old filter by turning it counterclockwise with your hand or a filter wrench if it was put on too tight. Wipe the mounting surface clean. Apply oil to the new filter's gasket. Install the new filter by turning it clockwise. Tighten it 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the mounting surface. Do not over tighten.
Apply a thin coat of oil to the gasket of the new filter. Tighten the filter 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the mounting surface. NO MORE NO LESS!
Tighten it 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the mounting surface. Do not tighten it any more or you may have trouble removing it. Be sure and apply a thin coat of oil to the oil filter gasket before you install it.
there is no torque on the oil filter!! when putting back on tighten the filter hand tight as much as you can.
It could if you crimp the gasket. Best bet is to remove it and install a new one. Put a little clean oil across the rubber gasket and clean the filter area on the engine. Tighten it as hard as you can BY HAND. It won't leak.
The ones I work on, you just take a #4 filter wrench, rotate the oil filter counterclockwise until it comes off, put some oil around the seal, mount the filter, hand tighten it, then tighten it an additional 1/4 turn with the filter wrench.
Your 1997 Mercury uses a spin on cartridge filter. The gasket is built into the filter. Just apply a thin layer of oil to the new filter gasket and screw it on. Tighten 3/4 turn after it makes contact with the mounting surface. Do not over tighten. If the old gasket was left on when you removed the old filter just pull it off.
No oil filter, no oil, lots of damage.
remove the oil filter. let it drain .Then remove the oil drain bolt at the bottom of oil pan and drain it. Put a new filter on and tighten it. Then tighten the drain bolt and fill to level with new oil.
