You'll probably feel pretty tired. In extreme cases of prolonged deprivation (known to occur in extreme cases of the Atkins diet), a person can enter into a state of severe, prolonged ketosis, which can require hospitalization. Consuming even a semi-normal diet will give you enough carbohydrates to avoid this.

  • Carbohydrates are used by the body for fuel/energy. There are simple carbs, which should be strictly limited, and complex carbs that are better.
  • Nothing harmful will happen if you don't eat many carbohydrates. Unlike protein and fats, there is nominimum daily requirement of carbohydrate in order to flourish physically. However, certain carbohydrates have many beneficial phytochemicals and fiber so eating some is fine as long as they are not refined processed carbohydrates. The best natural sources of carbohydrate are (preferably organic) fresh vegetables and fruits. For a list of refined (processed) carbohydrates, see the page link, further down this page, listed under Related Questions.

  • You get grumpy if the first few days of carbohydrate withdrawal. Then you come out of it and the cravings disappear (unless you ingest more carbohydrate.) However nothing harmful will happen if you don't eat carbs. Unlike protein and fats, there is NO minimum daily requirement of carbohydrate in order to flourish physically. However, certain carbs have many beneficial phytochemicals and fiber so eating some is fine as long as they are not refined (processed) carbohydrates. The best sources of carbohydrate are are (preferably organic) fresh vegetables and fruits. For a list of refined (processed) carbohydrates to be avoided, or strictly limited, apart from the occasional treat, see the related question further down this page, listed under Related Questions.
  • In my opinion, you need a daily minimum of 130g. Carbs are the main source of energy used by the brain and without it your body starts to break down protein in your muscles and then fat. Carbs are a very important source of energy for the body and mind... The brain functions much better with carbs as the primary energy source in my opinion.
  • Unlike protein and fats, there is NO minimumdaily requirement of carbohydrate for health or in order to flourish physically or mentally. There are no negative effects, diseases, or deficiencies, caused by not eating enough carbs. Moreover there are no side effects besides fat loss (if you have fat to lose). For the first week without carbs some people have withdrawal symptoms so they may feel fatigued. After that they are fine. Medical fact: carbohydrates are not a required nutrient. The Eskimo nation in times gone by lived perfectly well without them and they had less disease. (The best source of carbohydrates are vegetables and fruit, preferably organic).

Carbs are your bodys no 1 choice in fuel, and the stuff it'll use up first to keep you alive and active. When the carbs run out it'll start to burn fat instead, which is good if you want to lose weight but bad if you want to do strenuous things. Fat is slower to metabolize, so you can't work as hard on it. Fat is also very a poor energy source for your brain, which much prefers sugars as in carbs. Your concentration will dip, together with your general mental performance. Once the fat is gone the body will start breaking down the muscles to fuel itself, and by then you're in a pretty bad way.

Low carb intakeNothing harmful will happen (though you may go through carb withdrawal in the first week or so). Unlike protein and fats (which are essential to sustain life), there is NO minimum daily requirement of carbohydrate in order to flourish physically.

However, certain carbs have many beneficial phytochemicals and fiber so eating some daily carbs is fine as long as they are not refined (processed) carbohydrates. Refined (processed) carbohydrates are a major cause of weight gain, obesity, insulin resistance (syndrome X), Diabetes, and many diet related diseases.

For the sake of your health, avoid refined/processed carbohydrates (apart from the occasional treat).

For weight loss, or weight control, the best natural sources are (preferably organic) fresh non-starchy vegetables and low carbohydrate fruits such as berries. For further information about low carb foods, or to view a list of refined (processed) carbohydrates see the page link, further down this page, listed under Related Questions.

Studies in Sweden have recently suggested that not eating enough carbohydrate a daily basis may cause irregular and occasionally powerful surges of blood flow. In some instances men have found a reduction in their carb intake has enabled them to maintain erections for many hours (a natural Viagra if you like!). Within women the side effects vary greatly. The most commonly recorded have been linked with an apparent increase in breast size and libido. Essentially cutting carbs out of your diet could provide people with the sexual boost they (may or may not) require.
