Lactic acid is by-product of cell respiration. Its something secrete by your muscles when you work them overly. The cells in your body usually respirate normally by Glycolysis-Krebs Cycle-Electron Transport chain. However, when oxygen to these runs out (i.e. when you run so fast your demand for oxygen is more than the supply), your muscles use alcohol and lactic acid fermentation to produce oxygen. This has no really harmful effect on your body, but it can crystallize and cause muscle aches. This is the aches, sores, and cramps you get the morning after a marathon, jogathon, extreme workout, etc. (how did I do? rate me :) )
