∙ 13y ago"Cat years" is an oversimplification of a rather complicated process, and it's a little confusing what the term means... does "8 in cat years" mean the cat is actually 8 years old by the calendar, or does it mean that the cat is at a comparable developmental stage to an 8 year old person?
A cat which is 8 years old is considered "middle aged", approximately equivalent to a human in their late 40s (say, 48).
A pre-adolescent cat developmentally equivalent to an 8-year-old human would be somewhere around 4 months old, possibly a bit more.
The reason that the common "cat years" (and "dog years") are not used by veterinarians is that any constant ratio yields ridiculous results since they don't develop and age at the same rate that humans do. For example, cats are sexually mature at around a year of age. This indicates a ratio of at least 12 to one, but 20 year old cats are a lot more common than 240 year old people!
