This was a common problem on mid to late 80s' GM cars...The torque converter lock up clutch does not disengage and when you put the gearselector into drive the Torque converter clutch stops the motor.
The test for this problem is to put the drive wheels up in the air-put the car in gear and see if the motor kills. If not then the Torque converter clutch is stuck.. The simplest repair is to unplug the Torque converter plug on the outside of the transmission then the Torque converter clutch will usually disengage.

∙ 19y agoIf your car has a automatic transmission, put car in neutral get a rolling start then switch to Drive. If car stays running your problem could be a solinoid switch in transmission. The trans. is stuck in second or third gear which would cause your car to stall out.

∙ 13y agoChances are is that the transmission range sensor needs adjusting. The sensor is located on the side of the transmission and is attached the the manual shift cable. When you put your car in reverse it may go slightly back into park shutting the engine off. If you have a manual it will show you where it is and how to adjust it. Very simple.

how bout this on the 79 there is a vacum line to the trannie connects to trannie if comes off car wont go into gear look under for lose hoses. hope this helps

Because there are tumblers in the lock where you put the key in. When you put the right key in, all the tumblers are put in the right place and all the sensors are then turned off so the car will start. When all the tumblers are not put in the right position due to a bad key, the sensors stay on so when you turn the key, the cr won't start and the antitheft alarm goes off

Low transmission fluid will cause the vehicle not to move. Try filling the fluid and see if it works. good luck

The engine most likely is idling too low or not smoothly. Check for any vacuum leaks, and see that the EGR valve is not stopped up.

If you mean the car stumbles and dies then you need a tune up. If you mean the car dies "instantly" the Reverse light wire might be interfering with the carburetor shut off solenoid. The Solenoid is also wired to the coil with the reverse light. You should be able to hear a "click" on the carb when you turn the key on and off. With the key on, have some one put the car in reverse and see if you can hear the solenoid click off. Jay, you're really close but not quite. The problem is the reverse-light circuit's shorting to the frame. Maybe one of the wires has the insulation rubbed off and it's touching the frame. When you put the car in reverse, the switch closes, the power from the coil goes to ground and the car dies. The root cause is Volkswagen is running WAY too many things off the side of the coil.

Check the wires on the coil. If a couple are swapped to wrong positions, the car will run, but immediately stall when put in reverse.
