It's called downsizing. I can't speak for the rest of the world but in the United States there is a phrase known as "The American Dream". In the late 18th century and throughout the 19th century the American Dream was synonymous with owning ones own property and building their own empire. To build their own business and to flourish and prosper. Somewhere along the line and perhaps the industrial revolution had something to do with this people gave up on the notion of running their own business and settled for employment. After World War II many corporations seduced loyal employees by creating high pay jobs with benefits and as long as it was profitable for corporations to do this and still remain competitive in the market place there was no fear of losing this newfound form of security. But market places don't care about comfort zones and as the marketplace became more global conditions changed for business and the paradigm of high paid employees with total benefit packages became more of a liability than an asset. Many people who had come to depend on a single job to sustain them for a life time, people who did not care about business or markets and economies and only just wanted to do their jobs go home and enjoy the creature comforts they had accumulated, suddenly found themselves in a new paradigm and ill equipped to face the consequences.

The American Dream was never about working for the man and getting paid really well to do that, the American Dream was about being the man. I Have a Dream, do you have a dream?
