The region closer to the Mexico-US border. It is roughly defined by all states north of the Tropic of Cancer (23° 26' 16'' north of the Equator) which include Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas, Coahuila, San Luis Potosi, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas.

This region is quite arid, dominated by the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts; but it is the most industrialized in Mexico.

I guess you mean some trivia:

  • The state of Chihuahua is home of the Copper Canyon (27°30'58''N 107°45'57''W). The overall canyon system is larger and some portions are deeper, than the Grand Canyon in the neighboring United States.
  • Although the Mexican state of Sonora is considered part of the Sonoran Desert, it is Mexico's breadbasket as it leads the production of wheat, soybeans, table and wine grapes, olives, watermelon and asparagus.
  • Nuevo Leon is one of the most industrialized states of Mexico. In 2007, the per capita GDP of the state was similar to that of Taiwan and even higher than that of some European Union states such as Slovakia and Hungary.
  • The popular nachos snack originated in the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, just over the border from Eagle Pass, Texas, at a restaurant called the Victory Club, owned by Rodolfo De Los Santos. According to the story:

One day in 1943, the wives of a dozen U.S. soldiers stationed at Fort Duncan in nearby Eagle Pass were in Piedras Negras on a shopping trip, and arrived at the restaurant after it had closed for the day. The maître d', Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, invented a new dish for them with what little he had available in the kitchen: tortillas and cheese. Anaya cut the tortillas into triangles, added longhorn cheddar cheese, quickly heated them, and added sliced jalapeño peppers. He served the dish, calling it nachos especiales, or "special nachos".

  • An estimated 200,000+ American expatriates live in the state of Baja California, especially in coastal resort towns such as Rosarito, and San Felipe, known for affordable homes purchased by retirees who continue to hold US citizenship.
