In the greatest way, it was when the ottoman empire finally conquered Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantines) all the men of science, art, and learning fled to the west (primarily Italy) along with many refugees. With their learning they sparked the Renaissance establishing European cultures as the most advanced and powerful for centuries to come. In addition Rome (Byzantines as the were in fact Rome) shielded the greater part of Europe from mongol and ottoman invasion for centuries allowing Western culture to form with out being smothered by barbarians or religious zealots with huge armies. They probably did help in many more ways than these, but these are probably most important
In the long course of its independent history (from the 5th century until 1453), the Byzantine Empire had a diverse, and sometimes profound, impact upon its neighbors. Much of this impact was negative, as Byzantine wealth and cultural achievements were the cause of jealousy on the part of Arabic and even European outsiders; such jealousy led to military conflicts that eventually ended in the fall of the empire.
There were several different ways the Byzantine Empire affected Eastern Europe and Russia.
One was that the Byzantines provided missionaries who converted the people of Eastern Europe to Christianity, which brought them more closely into the society of Europe as a whole.
Another was that the Byzantines, unlike missionaries of Western Europe, sought to translate The Bible and the prayers into vernacular languages. For this purpose, they invented and introduced new alphabets, relevant to the languages of the local people, and taught them to read and write in their own languages.
The Byzantine Empire provided a center for trade with which people of Eastern Europe could conduct business.
The Byzantines also provided examples of their legal and governmental systems for the people of Eastern Europe.
