The Dark Ages was the time when what was known as Western European (Roman) civilization collapsed upon itself leaving nothing in its wake but chaos, disease, filth, ignorance, continual wars and an environment that blocked the sun by clouds and drove temperatures to the point where nearly a third of the people of the Western European World perished. Law vacated the lands, learning disappeared, order was replaced by petty local wars for territory, the cohesion of language fractured so much that in many cases one village could not communicate with another. Brigandage, piracy and marauding became so prevalent that even the most basic trade in food and goods almost completely stopped. Life was, as one writer put it, "brutal, filthy and thankfully short". This plague settled upon Western Europe for a half millennium save arguably by only two things: the spread of Scholastic Monasticism and the pea as a reliable and renewable protein source developed by Swiss monks. It was not until the coming of (1)Charlemagne and his rule in the 800 which rebuilt roads and instituted local order through central control, (2)the Millennial Pope, Sylvester II (Gerbert of Auriac), a scientist, mathematician, astronomer, scholar and effective diplomat and (3 ) the advent of the influence of Eastern finance and trade that the beginnings of reorder and the Middle Ages appeared. However, the common human inhabitant was little, if any, better off.
The Dark Ages in Western Europe, from 500-1000 CE, were a period characterized by political upheaval, economic decline, and social instability. Following the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the region struggled with invasions, limited trade, and a decline in education and cultural achievements. Feudalism and Christianity emerged as dominant forces, shaping the social structure and religious life of the time.
