The European polecat ferret is a wild ferret or non domesticated ferret from which pet ferrets where domesticated from.

The European polecat ferret (mustela putorius) from which the domestic ferret (mustela putorius furo) evolved from - are found across Europe, in New Zealand, Australia. European polecat ferrets were found throughout Britain up until the late 1930's. Heavy persecution by hunters and gamekeepers, caused a near extinction and remaining polecat ferrets were restricted to a small population in North Wales. They have since recovered and are populated throughout rural Wales, the Border counties and are spreading across the Midlands, South and to the South-East.

European polecat ferrets are found in all kinds of habitats, prefer to live in the lowland country on the edge of forests or in grasslands with islands of scrub trees, along bodies of fresh water, river banks, dry stone walls, field edges, marsh lands and woodpiles and are commonly found near humans in farmland and farm buildings.

They build dens among rocks and tree roots, and in old rabbit burrows. Polecat ferrets are solitary and predominantly a nocturnal animal that mainly hunts voles, rabbits, small rodents, by stalking their prey, and killing with a quick bite to the neck. They hunt by night or by day, and use their keen sense of smell to locate their prey. They also feeds on frogs, other amphibians, carrion and bird eggs. The Polecat is an expert swimmer, and will stockpile frogs in a riverbank den for eating at a later time.

  • The domestic pet ferret habitat in Europe is either kept as an indoor pet or in milder temperatures an outdoor court with weatherproof hutches or cubs, similar to dog kennels.

How do you know the difference between a European polecat and a domestic ferret?

Polecats and Ferrets are genetically very similar. The difference between a domestic ferret and a European polecat is that a ferret is the domestication of the Polecat and is a pet. Domestication has reduced the Ferrets ability to fend for themselves. Polecat Ferret hybrids do exist and are very difficult to distinguish from a true Polecat. The domestic ferret is smaller, and has a more fragile bone structure. A domestic ferret is usually lighter in color, and the mask does not reach the tinted neck band like it does with the European polecat. The European polecat has a rounder face. The back of the ears of a European polecat is dark, whereas it is light in the domestic ferret. European polecat jaws are much stronger than those of the domestic ferret. The European polecat is more muscular. The European polecat is a solitary animal and only meets in the mating season, while the ferret loves company.

Can ferrets live in the wild in Wales UK?

In Wales the polecat ferret is well-established and widespread. In the UK, there is a European ferret polecat that lives in the wild. Domestic ferrets have long ago lost all natural instincts and cannot survive on their own in the wild, they totally rely on humans. Hybrids between European ferret polecats and domestic ferret could survive on their own. Studies on ferrets in the UK was determined that domestic ferrets and European polecat ferret are so closely related, they are regarded as the same species.
