The "Soviet Union" is an informal name for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (a literal translation of the Russian language name), abbreviated to USSR.

This union was formed in 1922, and was dismantled on the last day of 1991.

The union consisted of 15 republics: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belorussia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. However, other countries often regarded the USSR as a single nation governed from Moscow, and often informally referred to in English as "Russia".

When the United Nations was formed in 1945, three of the republics (Belorussia, Russia, Ukraine) took seats in the General Assembly, as if Moscow wished to emphasise that the members of the union were separate nations.

The USSR extended from eastern Europe to the Pacific Ocean, and south to the Black Sea. Its area was 8,649,512 square miles (22,402,236 square kilometers), making it the largest nation (or federation) on earth.
