The Zimmermann Telegram was a telegram from the Foreign Office of the German Empire to the German Ambassadors in the USA and Mexico, instructing Eckhart, the ambassador in Mexico, to make contact with the Mexican government. If American entered WWI against Germany, the German government desired a military alliance with Mexico.

Germany offered to supply Mexico with arms and money, in return for Mexico invading the southern USA. They would be offered states like New Mexico, Arizona and Utah in return for their contribution if Germany won the war.
