The second industrial revolution gave people the capital means and motivation to expand. Buisnesses were looking for new markets and resources, Africa was-as they viewed it-there for the taking. Once it began it turned into a competition if, you were a country worth taking notice of you had a piece of Africa. Money, manifest destiny, and international competition.

Well, reasons for Imperialism, if that's what you mean, were the following:

Political: For power and national prestige

Economic: To gain resources from colonies and lands

Social: "White Man's Burden" by Rudyard Kipling: Goal was to "civilize the natives" by giving healthcare, education and religion.

The answer to this question is vast... However, if we boil it all down and get to the main purpose I would have to say it all deals with money..

I have had heard some teachers say it has to deal with the need for Natural Resources but even that was for making money...
