There is no debate over the meaning of Nirvana (the state of eternal egoless existence achieved by the enlightened). there are however issues about Nirvana between the two principle schools of Buddhism (Theravada, basically in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Mahāyāna, basically in East Asia). The issue is whether people drift into Nirvana individually or whether the enlightened return to aid the unenlightened achieve enlightenment.

What is the study of the rules of reasoning and how one should think is called?

I think this religion is called Buddhism. They believe in four noble truths: Suffering is universal, the cause of suffering is the desire to have and control things, suffering ends when they rid themselves of that desire, and the path to nirvana~spiritual enlightment~ is to practice the right thoughts, speech, and actions. They believe in reincarnation and that life cycles over and over again until nirvana is achieved. They don't believe in any god or gods.
