There is no debate over the meaning of Nirvana (the state of eternal egoless existence achieved by the enlightened). there are however issues about Nirvana between the two principle schools of Buddhism (Theravada, basically in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Mahāyāna, basically in East Asia). The issue is whether people drift into Nirvana individually or whether the enlightened return to aid the unenlightened achieve enlightenment.
Some debate over whether it is a permanent state or something one has to constantly work at. Less debate, more like confusion from outsiders whether it is a place or a state.
Buddhism was derived out of Hinduism, yet there are significant differences. Mainly on belief over one Supreme God and Moksha (liberation) or Nirvana (Liberation) methods.

There is no salvation in a Christian sense in Buddhism, that is there no deity judging you to determine if you are good enough to enter heaven. Rather we create suffering and happiness through our own actions. The Buddha illumanates a path that terminates at the end of all suffering, Nirvana or even full realisation. This path may require countless lifetimes to reach the goal of Nirvana.

Siddhārtha Gautama was the founder of the Buddhism. After arriving at an enlightened state of mind, he was known as Gautama Buddha. Buddha developed the methods of reaching enlightenmnt/nirvana and emphasized the middle path between the rejection of worldly and material concerns and over-concern with them.
