An Australian tram runs on tracks (like a train) that are in the middle of the road, which is also used by motor vehicles, and is powered by overhead electric power lines. Trains run on tracks which are usually separate from roads and are powered by diesel fuel, steam or eletricity from overhead cables.

A tram is a specific type of passenger train which runs along a road, sharing the road with other road vehicles.

A tram may only be on the road for part of it's route, and may run on 'normal' tracks for the other part.

A tram can carry many more passengers than a bus. But, when on the road, it is limited to the speed of other road vehicles.
