A moose is the biggest deer species weighing 1200-1600 pounds and standing 6-10 ft tall. It also is dark brown and the antlers of the moose grow up to 6 ft and the antlers do not look like sticks. Deer weigh 175-550 pounds and can be as big as elks sometimes. Elks weigh as much as deer do, but elks have taller and longer bodies than deers do.

Moose are larger and much more leggy than elk are, and also often all dark brown to sometimes black (depending on the light), with large ears, a bulbous, somewhat overhanging nose, and a pendulous bell hanging underneath the chin. Bull moose develop large, palpate antlers (or antlers that look almost scoop-like with sharp, pointed ends). Cow moose do not have antlers. As mentioned, moose are tall and large, the largest members of Cervidae (also known as the "deer family"), with bulls and cows standing over 6 feet tall (some are as tall or taller than 7 feet). Bulls can weigh around 1800 to 2000 lbs, and cows just a little less. Moose are solitary animals (except if a cow has a calf or more on her), unlike elk (or wapiti) which tend to stay in a herd.

Elk are smaller and shorter than a moose, bulls weighing around 1200 lbs and females around 800 to 900 lbs (some a little less, depending on age). Average height at the shoulder is 4 to 5 feet, though some bulls (and the occasional cow) may grow a little taller. They are a lighter brown in colour, the darkest being on their necks where they have a thickened and hairy ruff, and the lightest being a light tan to almost-white patch over their rump. Their noses are nothing like a moose and more like a deer (or almost a dog, being that it is hairless and moist), and have no penduluos bell hanging beneath the chin. Bulls have long, more slender, branching antlers that can reach 5 feet in length (and may span around 6 ft., especially with bulls that are in their prime).

Note that moose are often called elk in European countries like England and Scotland. What would be considered an elk there is considered a moose in North America.

Moose are much larger animals than deer. Average weight of a moose is around 1200 lbs, where as a deer only averages around 150 to 200 lbs, depending on the species. Moose are darker in colouration, tending to be a solid dark brown throughout their bodies. Deer are more variant in colouration, with a light brown colouration and white extending from the brisket to the underbelly and on the inside of the legs to the rear. Deer come in several species, unlike moose, and due to this the shape of the antlers of each deer species are different from another--as they are different from the moose. A moose's antlers are shaped like that of a wedge or cup with points coming out from it. Deer, on the other hand, merely have branches that extend into points--a Y-like point for mule deer, for instance.

Moose have a characteristic bell hanging down from their chins as well as a hump over their shoulders. They also have a snout that is almost bulbous in nature, the top lip being thick and extending over the bottom lip and soft like that of a horse (not wet like a dog's or a cow's). Moose also tend to be more "leggy" than a deer, making them appear much taller. Deer lack all of these characteristics, even though they are quite leggy themselves, but not as tall nor long as a moose. A deer's nose is like a cow's or a dog's, which is small and wet.

While deer are found all over the world, (all over North America, practically!) moose are more northerly and will never be found close to the equator. Moose are more adapted to a colder or temperate habitat, and can be found as far north as the Yukon and Alaska. Their most southerly habitat is that of the northern part of New England (including states like Pennsylvania and New York) or, further west, of Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Washington state and Oregon. A few isolated groups are also found in Colorado and Utah. Moose extend farther east into Russia/Siberia, Scandinavia (Finland, Sweden and Norway), Poland and the Baltic States.

Elk are deer. If you mean what are similarities between a white tailed deer for instance, and an elk, there are quite a few. Both species are herbivores, feeding on grass, leaves, bark, etc. The males of both species have antlers used do decide territorial/mating disputes during the breeding season. These are just a few ways smaller deer are similar to elk.

No, they are different species. Moose are larger and have shovel like antlers.
