The Iroquois (IR-ah-koys) Confederacy and Tribes are two totally different things. The Iroqious in itself is not a tribe, but a group of tribes that formed a confederacy. There were originally only five tribes in the Iroqious Confederacy; the Seneca, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, and Cayuga. These five tribes are the origin of the eagle holding five arrows in its tallons that is now seen on the back of the quarter. The five arrows represent the five tribes. (Why it was adopted to be put on the back of our currency, I couldn't say) The sixth tribe, the Tuscarora, was added later, and to the day there are six tribes in the Iroquois Nation. The Sioux is debatably one tribe. Other names, although others will argue otherwise, are commonheard names of Lakota, Dakota, Teton Sioux (all of which are also considered sub-tribes). The Sioux are the people most seen in westerns, and are the tribe that made the feathered cheif's headdress so famous. As of today, the Sioux are one of the largest tribes in North America. There are several differences between the two, and to be quite honest, the confusion between the two surprises me. For one, The Iroquois lived in the East, while the Lakota were neighbors with the Annishinabe/Ojibwe/Chippewa a considerably long distance West. Way back when, the Iroquois built longhouses suited for the terrain that they lived in. The Lakota were very much nomadic because of their hunting of bison, therefor lived in tipis, which were basically the Plains Tribes' version of a tent; easy to build, easy to move. Way back, the Lakota were the first and - as I recall - only tribe that had serious conflicts with Meriwether Lewis during he and William Clark's expidition. Today, the Lakota seem to be one of the more populous, more "sucessful" tribes remaining; they, so far, are better known than tribes like Oneida, Seneca, Cayuga, Tuscarora, and Onondaga on their own. The Lakota is the fourth-largest Native Nation in the United States, while the Iroquois alltogether is the eighth-largest. The Seneca have several reservations in New York, and are so far seemingly "sucessful," at least in comparison to other tribes. The city of Salamenca is the only U.S. city to be owned by a Native Tribe, and is owned by the Seneca Nation of the Iroquois confederacy. The two - The Iroquois Confederacy and the Sioux Nation - are two completely different people. The information I supplied is hardly scratching the surface, and who knows; there may be errors. I suggest looking at each tribe individually. Read up a bit on each's history and contemporary lifestyles. You will easilly see the difference between the two in culture - something that is very difficult to describe in words (every tribe has similarities, but very distinct cultures.) I wish you the best of luck!

They have very little in common. Not really much more than any other randomly picked pair of cultural groups. For example you could ask what do Germans and Turks have in common. They are both in the same continent and both fought the Russians, but they have little else in common. Similarly, the Navajo and Iroquois both fought the US government. Both grow corn and live in permanent houses. Otherwise their history, language environment, religion and other traditions have very little inn common. The main thing they have in common is they both had difficult relationships with the US government and their attempts to take their land and eliminate their culture and language. The Navajo did not have any contact with Americans until mostly after 1864 while the Iroquois had intense contact from the 1650 onward. Therefore much more the the language and culture of the Navajo is still intact.
