go to a car dealer that sells cars like yaours and ask a worker there. On my 97 Jetta with a standard transmission, I get 30 to 32 mpg (mainly used as a commute car). I have a 97 jetta gls and the gas mileage stinks on a full tank of gas, I get just over 225 miles. my '96 automatic gets 20 mpg average, these models are cursed with troubled, wasteful automatic trannies, especially if not meticulously maintained, buy a stickmobile and hold on to your dividends.
yes
with an automatic four your gas mileage can range between 14mpg and 16mpg. It will vary according to your type of driving. stop and go..obviously less mpg..highway..better mileage. remember a Jeep is for rock climbing and low torque power which is not conduceive to good mileage.
a 1997 Jetta gt has struts.
is it an automatic or standard?
From what I know and have heard, the automatic trans on this car is sealed. Meaning there's no dipstick.
I have a 1999 jeep wrangler and it get around 15MPG.

You need gauges and a refrigerant recovery system.
