The populist party may not have survived but some of their ideas did. For instance taking a look at the U.S. Constitution, the 16th amendment allows the federal government to levy an income tax. Or the 17th amendment which provides for the direct, popular election of senators.

Populism from Merriam-webster Dictionary : 1: a member of a political party claiming to represent the common people ; especially often capitalized : a member of a United States political party formed in 1891 primarily to represent agrarian interests and to advocate the free coinage of silver and government control of monopolies2: a believer in the rights, wisdom, or virtues of the common people

The Populist Party cherished land, therefor majority of Populists lived in the west. The populists changed American Society for example Shipping is very costly, in 1892 The populist party was formed so they had a voice, they were for free coal and silver, and influenced reduction in costs. Two main things Populists were known for was the development of Secret ballots and Income Tax.

Secret Ballots were designed by the party to minimize peer pressure to vote for X

Income Taxes were sought as reforming labor and aid to the economy

Populist - word means peoples, "We represent the people".

The Populists often ran for President, for example James Weaver, but none of them won because the group is made up for mostly farmers. When the Populist Party originated, from people who liked land, in the 1800s land was used to farm and the party was beginning the Progressive Era, they set the bar of quality they should get.

The legacy of the Populists, or "People's Party," included demands for direct popular election of United States senators and the empowerment of the Congress to lay and collect taxes on incomes from whatever source derived without apportionment or regard to any census.

Unfortunately for its chances of winning elections to the offices of President or Vice President of the United States, however, the party's legacy also included the only time when basing American currency on the standard of bimetallism (the coinage of silver AND gold at a ratio of sixteen silver coins minted for every one gold coin minted) ever became a major political issue.

Middle Western and Southern farmers were discontented because of crop failures, falling prices, and poor marketing and credit facilities. They formed Farmers Alliances, which led to the rise of the Populist Movement. The American banking system was the result.
