The minimum age to drive a car on the road is 17 years. Although there is regular speculation on that age rising or falling, no plans are in place to change the age limits.

A new driver must also be accompanied by a qualified driver at all times until both a written and a practical test have been passed. Neither of these can be taken until the age of 17 years.

The definitive list is at the link below, a quick summary is as follows: 16 for a provisional licence for a: moped not exceeding 50cc and 50 kph (30 mph), tractors less than 2.45m wide, and/or pulling trailers less than 2.45m wide. 17 for motorcycles not exceeding 125cc (A1), not exceeding 33bhp (A). Motor car (B) [Age 16 if in receipt of Disability Living Allowance {higher rate} Busses and HGV if member of the armed forces, larger tractors. 19 for large motorcycle if type A licence held for 2 years. 18 for learning to drive PSV and some vehicles under the young driver scheme i.e vehicles + trailers between 3.5 and 7.5 kg fully laden. 21 for large motorcycle if DAS completed or type A held for 2 years. All vehicles of groups A to P if appropriate licences are held.
