It is hard to say, but giant brands such as Hill's, IAMS, Royal Canin and Purina are probably some of the most popular brands today. However, just because their popularity doesn't always reflect on the actual quality of the food.

These brands are cleverly advertised, which increases the popularity. Hill's sell their foods through vets, most of whom they sponsor and the veterinary practices get a bonus when they sell Hill's food to customers.

Such big brands, despite their popularity, have very mediocre or low-quality foods. If one was to look at the ingredients, one would see very little meat being included and lots of grains, corn, wheat and other cereals. Grain is used instead of meat because it is cheaper to produce and helps the kibble pieces hold together. Ingredients such as "Ground Yellow Corn" and "Wheat Gluten" are a common cause of Allergies in cats.

Cats are strict carnivores; they get all their nutrition from fresh meat, and cannot digest nor need such high levels of carbohydrates that are in the grains and cereals.

The best cat foods are the ones with a very high, named meat content (labeled as Chicken, Turkey, Rabbit, Lamb, Tuna, etc.) as the FIRST ingredient with no grains, wheat, corn or any other cereals.
