The clan from India from which the kings of Burma (Myanmar) claimed descent is the Shakya Clan, then same clan that is known to have produced Siddhartha Gautama Shakya, also known as Guatama Buddha.
However, there is no documentary support (or archaeological or legendary support) for the Burmese connection to the Shakya before 1832. In that year the Hmannan Maha Yazawindawgyi (Glass Palace Chronicle) was published, having been compiled by a Burmese Royal Historical Commission from 1829-1832. Although this compilation was based on earlier chronicles, local histories, and inscriptions, a primary purpose was to provide legitimation of the Burmese monarchy according to religious criteria. Notably, it replaced the pre-Buddhist origin story of the Burmese Monarchy with one that links the monarchy to the clan of the Buddha and with Maha Sammata, the first monarch according to Buddhist tradition.
