The story goes that Trier was founded around 2000 BC by a prince named Trebeta, who was originally from Assyria (a kingdom that was mainly in what is now northern Iraq). Supposedly he wandered for a while into Europe after he was overthrown, and eventually settled in Trier.
That story was never written down until about 800 years ago, or about 3200 years after it supposedly happened- so it's unlikely to be true.
The likely true story is that the Romans built the first permanent settlement there- after defeating a Germanic tribe called the Treveri- around the time of Emperor Augustus. The new settlement was named "Augusta Treverorum" (which is basically Latin for "the Treverian city of Augustus"), and would eventually become a fairly large and important city.
