The railroad manufacturer Union Switch & Signal built .45 pistols for the US Army in WWII.
I am looking for one of those and would offer you $50.00 for it , depending upon condition that it works safely.
It's probably a model 14 but there's no question here to answer.

If you are referring to Colt model 1911 or 1911A1 Government issue pistols, it was because there was a need for increased production .During WWI ,they were also made by Remington Arms UMC & Springfield Armory. During WWII besides Colt, they were also made by Ithaca,Remington Rand and Union Switch & Signal, Also about 500 each made by Singer Mfg and H&R.
They used .58 caliber minie bullet's, lead slugs, and Thud Cannon's.
the union thought they could beat the union easily, however, the union surprised them. instead of a decisive victory for the south, there was a lot of bloodshed.
I would say it was the Colt revolver. This pistol was produced in various models, calibers and styles. The US Government placed orders for them and many more were bought by private money. The two common model was the Colt Navy in .36 caliber and the Colt Army in .44 caliber.
