Reagan won on a platform of national security and having a strong military (especially because of the cold war with the Soviet build-up). He played on the nations feeling of weakness after the failed rescue attempt. He gave the people what they wanted to hear. That we would become the strongest nation in the world and be respected worldwide after that embarrassing failure.
