Fish of the same location or temperaments. In cichlids keeping them grouped by specific locations (i.e. South American cichlids, New American cichlids, Lake Victoria Cichlids, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Malawi, Madagascar, etc.) helps keep deaths down, though it is possible to mix in some circumstances. There are also what is known as community fish. These are your generally more peaceful types such as mollies, guppies, sword tails, tetras, veritas, etc. And remember, just because a type of fish is suppose to act a certain way, does not mean all of them will.
There are simply thousands of fish that can be kept in community tanks. The simplest way to find out is to select the species you like and then ask if it they will mix OK. Generally, fish of greatly differing sizes are not mixed together because one will eat the other. Cold water fish are not usually mixed with warm water fish. Fish requiring acid water are not mixed with fish requiring alkaline water. Then there are fish that are so aggressive that they are never mixed with others and others that need to be kept in groups or shoals of the same species.
There are 3 types of fish: Community (peaceful), Semi-Aggressive (occasionally fights with other fish), and Aggressive (fights a lot). As long as you don't mix fish from two of the categories you will probably be fine. Having a community tank is the easiest to take care of. I hope this helps!

Most species will mix well provided they need the same water conditions, are of a similar size and you don't include predatory species.
The best thing to do is ask the shopkeeper in the fish shop and find out first but goldfish go together with no problems if you are lucky because some goldfish can't live together. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldfish

A beta fish lives happily in a bowl. Never, ever put a goldfish in a goldfish bowl (ironic, I know) because it's too small for them to live in.
