NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and SEATO (SouthEast Asia Treaty Organization) are collective defense organizations. Their members pledge to protect any other member in case of attack. In general, such organizations are created to discourage other countries from attacking any one member country.
The UN (United Nations) was formed in 1945. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was formed in 1949. ANZUS (Australia New Zealand United States Treaty) was formed in 1951. SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization) was formed in 1954/1955; was dissolved in 1977, when Pakistan & France withdrew.
The U.S. used organizations like NATO and the Marshall Plan to stop European nations from aligning with the Soviet Union.
SEATO required a unanimous vote from all members, which it never recieved, for involvement in the Vietnam War. So, some of the countries that were part of SEATO participated in the war, on behalf of America's request.
