New York was one of the thirteen original colonies of the British American Empire of Virigina. New York, was originally founded by the Dutch in the mid to late 1600s, and originally it was known as New Amsterdam and New Holland. Because at the time, the Dutch East India Company was so large, New Amsterdam was destined to be a trading city, pertched on a major waterway, the Hudson River, New Amsterdam was in perfect location to trade with the British Puritans in Boston, the British settlers in Jamestown, the French in Quebec and it was only a short jaunt up the coast from the resource rich caribbean islands. After the French and Indian War, the British took control of New Amsterdam, and renamed the city and the colony New York.

Evidence of its Dutch past still exist, including the names of famous strees and buroughs. First of all, the idea of Buroughs in a city date to the Dutch, as it is a Dutch word. Broadway, Walls Street, Heere, and others are all dutch names, along with Brooklyn and Manhattan.
