The Hudson Bay company saw the need for Trading Posts after a non-invasive 90 year study saw the native population go from 90,000 to 110,000 then maxed out as per subsistence lifestyle saw war, theft, starvation and migration patterns dropped back down to 100,000 people, petitioned the Crown to open trade for firs (the only thing the Europeans were interested in, fancy hats) to feed the needy, Once needs had been met, Chief's with wealth would trade for things like Beads from Italy. (recently found on trade routes in Alaska thus proving Tradepost records) as those beads were a sign of Wealth and prestige commanding position in people's minds as well as mirrors, hair brushes etc. Sure, we had corn, potatoes, darker tobacco, etc. but we did not trade for them if we could just take the seed back to Europe and grow it or cultivate it in the New World ourselves. So the answer is firs but the best seller of all the firs were the beaver hats, Royalty from Brittany preferred ermine in their white Winter coats and became their coat of arms. Mink was another high status symbol so basically at some point once needs were met, we had High status Chiefs trading with high status Royals (Kings, dukes, earls, lords etc. fancy items in one persons mind for fancy items in another persons mind while both thought the items they were trading for were cheap. Hence the saying, one man's junk is another man's treasure, and, always trade up. Has anything really changed?

How did the the arrival of Europeans affect Native Americans?

Watch Avatar or Pocahontas. Same thing. Also, the arrival of Europeans helped current Native Americans gain very easy access to college. The way America has said sorry, is by giving the Native Americans land in which they build casinos which lead to increase alcohol and gambling addictions. So, in the end Europeans took all the land of the Native Americans, tried to say sorry by giving them slight social favors and giving them horrible addictions to gambling and alcohol. Also, look up things like Trail of Tears.
