The US had nothing to do with the creation of South Africa's electoral system, which was established when South Africa became a British Dominion (like Canada or Australia) in 1910. South Africa has consistently been a democracy from that point onward and the US was wholly irrelevant in that process. While Apartheid existed from 1948-1992, this did not stop South Africa from being democratic; it is simply a question of limited suffrage. This is the same as the Southern US States under the Jim Crow Laws from the 1870s to the 1960s, which were still democratic, even though they had segregation laws.
If by "democracy" you are are referring to the repeal of Apartheid in 1992, the main influence that the US exerted was economic pressure on South Africa by way of an embargo. The US also exerted some of its diplomatic influence to further isolate the Apartheid South African government.
