It is the knock sensor. It retards the timing if the engine pings or rattels.
In the passenger side of the engine block, above the starter. (4.8L, 5.3L, and6.0L) 4.3L is in the timing cover, behind the balancer.
It is bolted in the side of the engine block behind the starter. You will have to remove the starter.
