Thaddeus Stevens represented Pennsylvania in the United States House of Representatives, first as a Whig (from 1849 until 1853) and later as a Republican (from 1859 until 1868).

He's sometimes confused with Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts, another Radical Republican.

Thaddeus Stevens was the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. But more importantly, he was the leader of the Radical Republicans in the House and even though he was not the Speaker of the House, he controlled much of what went on in the House through the sheer force of his personality. His detractors called him "the dictator of the House."
