In 1863, West Virginia was formed and became a state that sided with the Union during the American Civil War. The creation of West Virginia was the result of a split from Virginia, as many residents in the northwestern part of the state opposed secession. The new state was officially admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863.

West Virginia was the only stat to be formed through secession. Some Virginians didn't want to join the Confederacy, so they split off from the rest of Virginia to form a new state: West Virginia (which of course remained in the Union.)
The state of Virginia split over the issue of secession. The Virginians who lived in the western part of the state were unanimously against splitting from the union, while the rest of the state wanted secession. So strong was this belief, that the western portion of the state seceded from Virginia, and the state of West Virginia was formed.
