Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) left the town of Makkah (or Mecca) in year 622 AD to AlMadinah (or Medina). Both towns are in the current Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. However, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) didn't flee from Mecca to Medina. He just followed the command of Allah (or God and same God worshiped by Christians and Jews) to him to leave Makkah (or Mecca) to Al-Madinah (or Medina) to continue the call for Islam religion from there especially that people of Medina invited him and welcomed him there. He was informed by Allah (or God) that the unbelievers of the tribes of Makkah (or Mecca) planned to assassinate him. On the planned night of assassination, he was instructed by God to leave Mecca for Medina.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) didn't flee from Makkah (or Mecca). The migration from Mecca was per God command to him. He was informed by Allah (or God and same God worshiped in Christianity and Judaism) that the unbelievers of the tribes of Makkah (or Mecca) planned to assassinate him. On the planned night of assassination, the prophet Cousin Ali Ibn Abou Taleb slept in the prophet bed and the prophet left home while the pagans who planning to assassinate him are surrounding his home. He threw on them some dust and they neither saw him nor felt his departure (This is a miracle from God). When they woke up in the morning, they discovered that the prophet succeeded to leave Makkah (or Mecca) together with his companion Abou Bakr to Yethrib, which is now called Medina (or AlMadinah) where people were waiting to welcome him.

So, prophet Muhammad immigrated to Yethrib; that is currently called Medina (or AlMadinah). Medina is now the second holiest city in Islam, with Mecca being first and Jerusalem being third.

What is meant by 622CE?

In the dating system used for calendars, 622 CE refers to the year 622 of the Common Era. It is equivalent to saying 622 A.D. In the past, the convention was to use B.C, and A.D. because calendars were based on the birth of Christ. To represent a time before his birth, B.C. was used, and A.D meant a time after his birth. Historians have adopted an alternative system to designate time on a calendar, using instead the CE and B.C.E.
